Jazz Series/World Music: Sheimyrah Mighty is a rising star vocalist, and she comes with the Assel Jean-Pierre Trio. Many genres of music, tinged with a Haitian flavor.

*** Sheimyrah Mighty: Gospel Roots, Jazz Horizons By Ward Gros

There is something disarming about hearing Sheimyrah Mighty sing in a room small enough to catch the breath between phrases. The Brooklyn-born vocalist’s voice carries warmth and conviction, drawing the listener into the emotional center of a song.

Sheimyrah grew up in Brooklyn and started singing in church at 3. Music was part of family life. At 13, she heard Billie Holiday sing “God Bless the Child” and discovered a different kind of expression. Holiday’s phrasing showed her how Jazz offered freedom while church remained her foundation.

Her newest single released this year, “God Why” came to Mighty during a difficult stretch in 2021, while she was recovering from a car accident in the middle of the pandemic. Singing had been such a constant in her life, but after the accident she could not walk on her own and stopped performing. For a while, she stopped listening to music, too. “I didn’t listen to music for months,” she said. “I was depressed. And then the song came to me. I had to ask, ‘God Why.’”

The song offers no quick answer. Pianist and producer Assel Jean-Pierre Jr. keeps the arrangement spare, with piano and cello leaving room for Mighty’s voice. She can move from a near-whisper to a fuller, more powerful sound without losing the thread of the lyric. Nothing feels added for effect.

Sheimyrah and Assel brought years of trust to the session. Their parents grew up together, and the two have known each other most of their lives. “We’re basically family,” she said. “He’s like a brother to me.” They turned off the studio lights before she recorded the vocal. “I started to cry while I was singing,” she recalled. “All the memories.”

Assel knew the moment belonged on the record. “Reaching the emotion and depth she felt when the song first came to her was a vulnerable moment,” he said. “A song can be as perfect as you want it to be, but that honesty stays with you.” Sheimyrah sings with warmth and conviction, moving from intimacy to full-bodied power carrying the lyric’s emotion.

“God Why” comes from faith, Sheimyrah leaves room for listeners with their own questions. She shares the experience without turning it into a lesson.

“That’s how I approach songwriting,” she said. “I write about life, about what people can relate to. Not everything in life has an answer.” Sheimyrah sings with a full range of emotion as exemplified on her album “It Is Well” previously recorded with Assel has been well received and brought her to Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, yet “God Why” is a better introduction than a list of venues. It shows what happens when a technically accomplished singer trusts the song enough to let it speak for itself.

Join Sheimyrah and the trio for an evening of soulful singing, vibrant musicianship, and the kind of connection that only live music can create as they perform at Timucua on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 7:30–9 p.m.
